The Evil That Men Do: Willful Submission To Illegitimate Authority by Bill Buppert

“Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient must be slaves.”

– Henry David Thoreau

“The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules but by people following the rules. It’s people who follow orders that drop bombs and massacre villages.”

– Banksy, Wall and Piece

“Fear is a strange soil. It grows obedience like corn, which grow in straight lines to make weeding easier. But sometimes it grows the potatoes of defiance, which flourish underground.”

– Terry Pratchett, Small Gods

“The disappearance of a sense of responsibility is the most far-reaching consequence of submission to authority.”

– Stanley Milgram

“Command is a mountaintop. The air breathed there is different, and the perspectives seen there are different, from those of the valley of obedience. The passion for order and the genius for construction, which are part of man’s natural endowment, get full play there. The man who has grown great sees from the top of his tower what he can make, if he so wills, of the swarming masses below him.”

– Bertrand De Jouvenel, On Power

“If physical power be the fountain of law, then law and force are synonymous terms. Or, perhaps, rather, law would be the result of a combination of will and force; of will, united with a physical power sufficient to compel obedience to it, but not necessarily having any moral character whatever.”

– Lysander Spooner

“Many politicians of our time are in the habit of laying it down as a self-evident proposition, that no people ought to be free till they are fit to use their freedom. The maxim is worthy of the fool in the old story, who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim. If men are to wait for liberty till they become wise and good in slavery they may indeed wait for ever.”

~ Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800—1859)

The US Federal government through its satraps and political goons in Nevada just crowd-sourced and thug-scrummed fourteen folks from the Bundy circus in 2014. The prosecution complex at the beck and call of the DC Orcs will print out reams of charges and indictments to bury these hapless souls in. I am assuming that they will wait until 2018 to gather up the latest miscreants who occupied an empty Federal facility in Oregon. Note the irony of the use of the word occupy in all these circumstances.

The massive Stasi-like scheme to make preemptive speech and behavior actionable for kidnapping, fining and imprisonment under color of law is moving apace. Read the indictments carefully because more of the same and worse is coming. Much like the infamous Roberts ruling on National Socialist healthcare that taxes inactivity. Of late, starting with the noxious McCain-Feingold campaign speech nonsense in concert with the enormous national security state, the weaponizing of the state has taken an exponential leap forward in its ability to prosecute not only victimless crimes and objections to state growth but the notions of pre-crime are starting to emerge with a vengeance.

Victimless crime and fictional crimes like malum prohibitum demand an informant culture that, like torture, morally corrupt everyone ensnared in the system. And that informant culture in the USSA is massive indeed.

The entire concept of a rule of law is specious and only feeds the evil people in charge. And keep in mind that one human on Earth can have their personal liberty sundered if not for the use of police forces by government planet-wide.

The US government has managed to electronically replicate what the East Germans built:

“45,000 sections of reinforced concrete—three tons each. Nearly 300 watchtowers.
Over 250 dog runs. Twenty bunkers. Sixty five miles of anti-vehicle trenches—signal wire, barbed wire, beds of nails. Over 11,000 armed guards. A death strip of sand, well-raked to reveal footprints. 200 ordinary people shot dead following attempts to escape the communist regime. 96 miles of concrete wall”.

The Feds need none of this anachronistic infrastructure, they have simply used the electronic ether tethered to a vigorous police state apparatus to replicate the choking and monstrous affront to human freedom that the Berlin Wall represented.

We live in tumultuous times that demand close attention to the yokes being placed on us. The US government is seemingly in the throes of a coup that is exponentially creeping and expanding into what was formerly a fairly autonomous province. Every sector and branch of human transactions that are palpable in this mortal coil is now being subject to regulation, taxation or both. With no authority whatsoever, entire swaths of American society are being subsumed under Leviathan state.

What is the authority or color thereof that these alien entities are gobbling up entire patterns of human existence? I have hinted before that the denizens of Mordor on the Potomac act as if their authority is unlimited and their ultimate reach is anything they please. We are witnessing a vicious brew of Sovietization and Mussolini-style state corporatism that will take a revolution to undo. The annals of Western history are full of this kind of grand hubris enabled by consent both willing and silent on the part of the populace. Humans tend to submit to a yoke or collar when invested with fear and anxiety about futures worse than now. The corpse-count in the twentieth century topped 262 million outside of warfare through democide.

Wholesale murder is big business for government.

These morbid thoughts seem intemperate measured against the apparently “peaceful” measures of Mordor to instill Keynesian stability and save the banksters from themselves with nary a peep of protest from the appropriately red-colored Grand Old Politburo. If you ever had the notion the parties were different, just look at the seamless transition between Bush II and Obama. The only difference between these monsters is skin color because collectivism is thicker than water.

Look at the temptation — you step into the cockpit of the Offal Office and decades of creeping totalitarian weeds have strangled and mastered practically every facet of American behavior and life. A simple touch of the controls and hundreds of thousands of subsidiary bureaucrats in the Executive agencies somewhat smoothly respond to the yoke to amp up taxation here and increase regulation there and the heady brew of total power starts to go to the President’s head. One can count on a single hand the number of Presidents who took the limitations on their power seriously (Van Buren, Cleveland and Coolidge among the all-stars). As Royce pointed out in his brilliant but under-appreciated book, The Hologram of Liberty, that the Constitution was doomed at the beginning by Hamilton’s curse (Burr did not get to him soon enough) and the temptations of George Washington to start the executive imperial ball rolling (witness the Shay’s and Whiskey Rebellions) against state sovereignty.

The most basic building block for compliance to illegitimate authority is fear. Drivers speed but always take caution if a hint of police presence or the increasingly ubiquitous camera systems are in place. Rare is the libertarian who wants to pay taxes of any stripe but compliance is heeded to avoid fines and imprisonment, or worse. We do not obey because it is the core right thing to do when it comes to most government edicts.

Fear and obedience are the brick and mortar of the state and the collectivists are the stonemasons.

I don’t harm my neighbor nor do I steal his property because it is against the law but my inner moral compass best exemplified by the Ten Commandments or the Categorical Imperative provides my azimuth for behavior. I want to eliminate the perennial bugbear that the MSM and government schools drill into the populace — righteous and correct behavior only emanates from government coercion to make you do the right thing.

Step back and examine that proposition. Can you think of any government initiatives or programs that not only supported perverse incentives but made you much worse off? I will let you ponder your own answers but they are legion. Just think — the entire Federal Register provides the enterprising social science researcher with a gargantuan solution set to the second- and third-order effects of perverse incentives and iotragenic effect that animates the entire sordid history of government intervention.

Consider this. Once again, the usual suspects from both sides of the aisle (how quaint) in Mordor are proposing the abolition of cosmetically offensive (the assault weapons misnomer) weapons at the stroke of an executive pen. There are tens of reasons why this is wrong-headed but one of the reasons proffered by the new Attorney General, Eric Holder, is that the Mexican drug cartels are getting weapons from America to use in their campaign against the Mexican government.

So let me get this straight: the American Drug War has not only failed in America but has led to the instability of both Columbia and Mexico among others, forcing the latter to the brink of collapse which will have untold deleterious effects on every border state in these united States. As a result of these calamitous events, I now have to surrender my weapons to the FEDGOD to prevent them from falling into the hands of drug lords whose very existence is a second-order effect of Federal drug policies that enable their criminal empires.

Decriminalize, not legalize, drugs in America tomorrow and in a month all drug cartel threats to Latin America dissolve. Remember the hoary and heavy-handed campaigns in 2002 by the FEDGOD and their sycophants, the Ad Council, to proclaim in grand Potemkinesque tones the linkage between the purchase of illegal drugs to terrorism? Who is supporting terrorism now? I offer this as an illustration that doing the right thing is by no means the province of the government

Take the red pill a moment and ask yourself what motivates what you imagine to be judicious and right-thinking behavior toward your fellow man. Is it a result of government mind laundering or is it a result of religious conviction or secular philosophy? Among libertarians and anarcho-capitalists, it tends to be the latter and I suspect a burgeoning part of the American population, especially ruralites, arrive at the same conclusion. Which brings us to our next step.

What constitutes legitimate authority? Traditionally, it has been divined from the family and to the extended relationships formed among family and friends. Do you create friendships out of fear or affection? Coercion or persuasion? Then we examine how network and tribal relationships start to bloom as people start to establish communities from whence increasing concentrations lead to cities and consummate in the horrid state of affairs we are in now with overweening and oppressive government. If we tease apart this oversimplified flowchart, we discover that legitimacy of authority tends to the abstract the more impersonal the relationships evolve. In other words, the farther the authority strays from genuinely personal relationships, the more reliance on fear and coercion is necessary. Hence the government tends to use this as an exclusive means of shaping and conditioning obedience. Which bring us to the central question. And make no mistake, this is all imperial conditioning.

What constitutes legitimate government authority? Lysander Spooner far more eloquently answers the question than I can when examining the Constitution. To wit:

The consent, therefore, that has been given, whether by individuals, or by the States, has been, at most, only a consent for the time being; not an engagement for the future. In truth, in the case of individuals, their actual voting is not to be taken as proof of consent, even for the time being. On the contrary, it is to be considered that, without his consent having ever been asked, a man finds himself environed by a government that he cannot resist; a government that forces him to pay money, render service, and forego the exercise of many of his natural rights, under peril of weighty punishments. He sees, too, that other men practise this tyranny over him by the use of the ballot. He sees further that, if he will but use the ballot himself, he has some chance of relieving himself from this tyranny of others, by subjecting them to his own. In short, be finds himself, without his consent, so situated that, if he use the ballot, he may become a master; if he does not use it, he must become a slave. And he has no other alternative than these two. In self-defence, he attempts the former. His case is analogous to that of a man who has been forced into battle, where he must either kill others, or be killed himself. Because, to save his own life in battle, a man attempts to take the lives of his opponents, it is not to be inferred that the battle is one of his own choosing. Neither in contests with the ballot — which is a mere substitute for a bullet — because, as his only chance of self-preservation, a man uses a ballot, is it to be inferred that the contest is one into which he voluntarily entered; that he voluntarily set up all his own natural rights, as a stake against those of others, to be lost or won by the mere power of numbers. On the contrary, it is to be considered that, in an exigency, into which he had been forced by others, and in which no other means of self-defence offered, he, as a matter of necessity, used the only one that was left to him.

Mind you, apart from the temporal considerations of support for the Constitution, he further makes the keen observation that mere numbers and democracy are not the moral means to elicit support and in fact lead to the opposite of voluntary support. The Anti-Federalists were very wary of democracy and made their misgivings known at the time. And if you haven’t read the Anit-Federalist Papers, you are intellectually malnourished. Mr. Spooner further avers:

One essential of a free government is that it rest wholly on voluntary support. And one certain proof that a government is not free, is that it coerces more or less persons to support it, against their will. All governments, the worst on earth, and the most tyrannical on earth, are free governments to that portion of the people who voluntarily support them. And all governments though the best on earth in other respects — are nevertheless tyrannies to that portion of the people — whether few or many — who are compelled to support them against their will. A government is like a church, or any other institution, in these respects. There is no other criterion whatever, by which to determine whether a government is a free one, or not, than the single one of its depending, or not depending, solely on voluntary support.

If you are not a student of Lysander Spooner, you are poorer for it. I am trying to offer the suggestion that not only is democracy the wrong vehicle to determine the legitimacy of authority in government but leads to Bastiat’s prediction which is evident from every press release from Mordor: “The state is that great fiction by which everyone tries to live at the expense of everyone else.” So we have identified some of the vehicles for legitimate authority but how do we parse the difference between legitimate and illegitimate species.

It all depends on your own moral compass and the principles you live by. Pol Pot and Stalin certainly had their own ideas which were in direct contravention to the notions of Jefferson and Spooner. The legitimacy of the authority is given power through compliance. Those who fail to comply and stand out as individuals will reap the greatest whirlwind but someone will have to stand up much like the ahistorical Kubrick production of Spartacus in which the Romans finally surround and defeat the slave Army. A Roman officer strides forward and demands that Spartacus identify himself. Spartacus stands up and does so and then one by one other members of his Army stand and declare — “I am Spartacus” — with the full knowledge that they are all going to suffer the gruesome death of crucifixion along the Appian Way for participating in a slave revolt.

The times ahead are going to be as challenging and devastating as the late War of Northern Aggression. It may be the right time to start considering how much compliance you are willing to lend to illegitimate authority as you measure it by your own moral compass.

Bad laws were meant to be broken.

“I do all the evil I can before I learn to shun it? Is it not enough to know the evil to shun it? If not, we should be sincere enough to admit that we love evil too well to give it up.”

– Mohandas Gandhi

“He who joyfully marches to music rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.”

  1. Thank you for this post. Thank you for the intellectual and grammatical challenge that is so lacking in the public fool system. (I started grade school a year before Kennedy was shot.) I must admit that nearly every paragraph causes my eyes to glaze over and my mind wander because you write on a grade level beyond most. I wind up rereading each sentence and paragraph several times for comprehension. If you lowered the grade level of your writings, you may gain a few more readers but your views and ideas would be lost in the noise of all the other writings of the liberty community.

I often think of the book “The Probability Broach”, by L. Neil Smith, and the sequels. How much further as a society would we be today if we threw off the shackles of government when there was a chance at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion. I am afraid that this country will have to reach the tyrannical level of North Korea before a sufficient number of people start to wake up. I am sure that the powers that be know that by then it will be too late.

    1. Thanks for the observations and many have counseled me on this to include my sainted bride. I write “thick” and try to make every sentence count. There is only so much time in this mortal coil before I pass over the River Styx. Thanks for perservering.

Per Mr. Smith, who is a friend of mine, I always wonder the same thing. WE would have colonized the solar system and more, technology would be so much further advanced and modern Michelangelos and Einsteins would be dead or rotting in prison for possessing illegal vegetation or violating some exotic diktat only a politician could love.

The politicians, better refereed to as violence brokers, have probably done more to stunt human civilization than any disease pandemic ever could.

      1. Bill,

Thanks for the good article and your well penned thoughts and research. I agree with Anthony in so much as your writing causes me to dust off my vocabulary and venture into words and quotes that are new territory for me.

However, Don’t Change! The literary bar has been lowered enough by the controlling factions. Having graduated in the bottom 10% of my class academically, I eventually realized that I had been shortchanged in the deceptive myth of “public education” and have taken upon myself the responsibility of my own education, and what freedom that has given me! A concept that should be instilled by all Good parents to their children as soon as they are able to comprehend any directives.

Regarding the gist of your article, apart from God, ALL is evil and hence the need for law.

Lucifer alluded to the same rebellious notion as Thoreau, however with different intent:

4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

“Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient must be slaves.”

        – Henry David Thoreau

I can almost hear Satan hissing Thoreau’s quote to back up his own half truth.

My point being, one can argue the virtues of law till the cows come home. The defining difference between Good laws and Evil laws is not only the intent of the law, but how they are enforced and to what purpose.
The simple fact of the matter is, as a fallen people, we need them, but as a fallen people, we corrupt them better than we live by them.

I look forward to the day when my Savior rescues me from this fallen, corrupted stew.

In the meanwhile, I’ll do my best to obey the Lord’s laws and continue to be skeptical and rebellious to all others that don’t measure up to HIS.

        Great work!!

  7. Greetings from a common man.

Please find enclosed documentation about local efforts (Eugene. Or.) to “stem the tide.” I have provided this information with the following assumptions:

1.) This system is not redeemable. (vulture capitalism)
2.) No true freedom movement can occur unless there is local control (farms/food). Thus breaking the corporate monopoly.
3.) Co-oping County government. (informally at first)
4.) Ultimate goal is Land Reform with homesteading.
5.) Education of founding principles with modern vision of in-country peace. (Jeffersonian)
6.) The people we are opposed to – start wars for profit. (beware)

Any suggestions, correspondence, sharing would be appreciated. Below is what I have been promoting on faceBook.
    ============
    Hi,
I saw your name on the OURS (occupy unsanctioned rest stops) and thought you could use/or pass on the following information. I believe we (as lane county) must address how to live as free humans. That requires discipline. We need leaders that understand the “real” issues. Example: Activist get camping ban lifted – but – people are forced into camps. That is Not a solution. But it is a start for organizing .

I have included a conversation I had with the Mayor recently. It starts at Mayor-25.png – I included the whole conversation for context. If you want to keep these doc’s you should download them. (certain activist kill these profiles and messages disappear. Which means I don’t know if you received these before – Pardon if so.)

And if ANYONE has a better idea or variation please share it! After much consideration i am convinced that the following idea (or variation) is viable.

    posted FB 9-6-15 OURS PAGE
Core Group first. Or to say, Who’s risking how much and for what? That needs to be decided first. Here are a couple of Known Known’s: (see Rumsfeld’s remarks about knowns)

    A team

A team knows its member’s strengths and weakness and uses to its best advantage. A team member can call another member at anytime with a sticky issue. A team has no problem discussing any issue with candor. A team can disagree in the particulars and remain strong because of the mutual understanding of the goal. A team knows that there has to be a “First Citizen” to set goals, give support, set the tone, arbitrate disputes, extol the virtues, reward and punish.

What is necessary to get the existing institutions to preform their expected task?
Activist must provide Moral Support and interested observation, personal support, clear understandings as to the goals etc…

Activist must legitimize the institutions to think and act in different ways. It must understand and provide cross-talk and coordination to unions, fraternal organizations etc… That is the PEOPLE that work in those institutions!

Start at the U.O.; many there don’t appreciate Uncle Phil buying the place. This is where we get the intelligence to work effectively. (what happened to the Cambell Club?)

Activist must encourage the Permaculture to cross-talk with U.O. Agriculture Extensions; Scientific Sustainable Movement, Lane Co. Granges, Woofing Advocates, etc…
It must have Economy. The Point is to recreate the “Small Village Model” NOT the UN

Agenda 21. The people that can, need to go back to the land – Free (as can be) from perpetuating the PAX AMERICANA.

  8. Beano McReano

I think PH explained it best when she said WE created the Federal government and granted it its enumerated powers through our agreed upon Constitution.

It’s not the other way around. It is OUR creation and we can alter or abolish it when it no longer serves the people Constitutionally.

    1. That’s a great retort to the so-called “Restorationists,” Beano.

They probably wouldn’t hear it though, just like they manage not hear the Founders saying that it’s self-evident that a government can only derive just power from the consent of the governed.

S&G—“A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.”

    2. The general population of the time did not create the Constitution.

Bill has mentioned this in the past.

The convention was called to find out how to pay for the war debt though or amending the Articles of Confederation. There was a coup by Washington, Hamilton, Madison, and their buddies in Banking, Lawyers, and land speculators who created the Constitution weeks before the convention. The people as a group did not like the Constitution. It was passed largely by State committees comprised of more State elitists.

I can not understand why America was forced to pay for a war it has allegedly won?

Most likely the reason is that America did not really win the war.

      Bill,

Do you have a convenient list of books that I could obtain from a Library or on line resources about the arguments against the Constitution other than Spooner and the Anti-Federalist papers? I have read some of these. Their grammar is just as difficult as yours. Of course it is not your fault but mine and the public fools system.

It would be convenient for your readers if there was a links heading near the top of your page rather than scroll through your articles to pick out references one at a time. I would like to buy your books but I am suffering from too much government.

      1. Bullwinkle,

BTW, if you frequent my blog and don’t buy my books, no harm and no foul since the USG taxes us all above 100%. I appreciate your readership and patronage (despite the difficulty of my writing. :))

I can’t recommend Kenneth Royce’s Hologram of Liberty highly enough for a thorough understanding of why the Constitution is so evil.

  12. I scream, you scream, we all scream for Freedom! Today is my first visit and I feel like I found a kindred spirit here. Very engaging article. Much appreciated.

  13. Romans 13:1 Every [a]person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except [b]from God, and those which exist are established by God.

2 Therefore [c]whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

    3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for [d]good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;

4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.

5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.

6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.

7 Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

    1. Gandhi: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

        1. Christ Jesus has said;
“And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.21 Luke 22:25 …”But ye shall not be so.”

Jesus said in Matthew 20:25 “But Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you

Mar 10:42 But Jesus called them [to him], and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
Mar 10:43 But so shall it not be among you

“Men must be governed by God, or they will be ruled by tyrants.” ~ William Penn

‘We ought to obey God rather than men .”

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

God commands to have no one before him, for he is jealous.
Man says ”I will have your first-fruits. You are my slave.”

God commands thou shall not kill.
Man says ”Sally forth and spread my statist religion with the edge of a sword.”

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.~ G. Washington.

“The people cannot delegate to government the power to do anything which would be unlawful for them to do themselves (John Locke)”, is based on Natural Rights, that “all men are created equal”, that [is to say] they are endowed by their Creator with certain un-alien-able Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and Property.

  14. It took a long time, but finally dawned on me that the big obstacle preventing our freedom is money. All those government employees depend on those checks to feed and house their loved ones. We can’t just cut them off, they’re mostly just working stiffs like us, trying to make a living, and this system isn’t the fault of their families.
If I’m right, however, there is a way to get them off our backs while not cutting off their pay checks. We The People can and do cause new money to enter circulation, and there’s nothing preventing us from paying all those government employees with new money instead of our taxes. The question is how. Right now We do it using the mechanism of debt with compound interest, and the new money only enters circulation from a central choke point, causing poverty from the so called inflation tax.
Again if I’m right, there is, and below is a description of a new monetary product I think can do the job. I apologize for the length, but included a lot of detail since most people don’t think about our official money, the US dollar, this way. This first part is a description of the new money. The part demonstrating how it gets the government employees off our backs comes next. I hope you like it:

The idea for this product comes about as the logical conclusion of several facts about this world and it’s high division of labour economic systems.

Fact: Money is the one product at the center of the high division of labour. It is half of nearly every transaction. It can truthfully be said that nothing happens unless the money’s right.

Fact: The US dollar is effectively the money of planet earth. Nearly all products and services have a price in US dollars. When people of other countries purchase money from outside their country, they typically first purchase US dollars and use those to purchase the other money.

Fact: The US dollar is currently defined, by the full faith and credit of We The People of the USA, as 1/42.2 oz, or about 0.67g, of gold. What this means is that every dollar bill* in your wallet and in your bank is a promise from We The People that you are the owner of 0.67g gold in our treasury vault**.

Fact: Before the US dollar was 0.67g gold it was 0.8g, or 1/35 oz gold. Before it was 0.8g gold it was 1.4g, or 1/20 oz gold. Before it was 1.4g gold it was 27g of silver. Coins with 27g silver were called thalers before they were called dollars. Thalers were silver coins with 27g of silver and were given their names because they were minted from silver that had been mined in thales, or valleys. The name thaler was used simply because saying “thaler” was easier than saying “one of those 27g silver coins from the mint that uses silver from those mines in the valley” The word thaler migrated through Holland and through Spain where it became the word dollar, which was then used in the colonies in the New World, where the coin remained unchanged until the late 1800s.

Fact: The US dollar has changed three times in the history of the USA, most recently in the 1970s when it changed from 0.8g to 0.67g gold. Each time it was changed the change came about because We The People, acting through our representatives, decided to change it. The change happened entirely in imagination land and consisted of nothing more than a choice. The only thing that happened in reality land was a sign, in the form of people saying “aye” and in marks laid down on paper. If the US dollar were to change again, it could happen in the same way without setting a precedent.

Fact: There are a lot of bad things happening in the world, right this second.

Fact: Some of the bad things happening right now are land being damaged to mine gold.

Fact: Each of those units of 0.67g gold we use as money can be thought of as a crude measurement of the bad being done in the world. The more 0.67g coins dug up from the land and put into vaults, the more damage done to the land.

Fact: Nearly everyone needs money, to purchase shelter and food. If one way of getting money is to damage the land to get things that can be used as money, then we can expect that some people will choose that way to get it, and therefore we can expect land to be damaged.

Fact: Money is a property of a thing, not the thing itself. If you can’t use a gold coin as money, then it isn’t money, it’s just a trinket made of a cosmetically attractive but mostly useless metal. Money is that peculiar item which you don’t want, but you accept in trade for your valuable product or service nonetheless because you hope to later trade it for something you do want. For example, if Ryan wants Mike’s shirt, and knows that Mike wants Dan’s shoes, and also knows that Dan wants his socks, he can offer Dan his socks in trade for Dan’s shoes even though he doesn’t want them, because he’s going to use those shoes to trade for Mike’s shirt. Ryan used the shoes as money, and they became money for the purposes of that two step transaction.

Fact: Things can be produced solely for the purpose of being used as money. In 1500s Bohemia silver was purified and made into 27g coins with stamps guaranteeing to the users that the coins contained 27g silver. Weighing the silver and making the 27g units of silver into easily recognised coins, and doing that reliably was the service the producer of the coins, the mint, provided to its customers. This service made the silver in the coins more valuable than other silver because it provided people with a convenient way to measure the silver. They could simply glance at the coin instead of assaying and weighing it. Things that are used as money are simply one of the many products existing in any high division of labour economy. See “The Ethics of Money Production” by Jorge Huelsmann. Gold, silver, copper, sea shells, cattle, salt, cigarettes and many other things have been popularly used as money in various times and places.

With these facts in mind, an obvious question comes to mind: “Instead of measuring the bad done to the land and then using that badness as money, is there a way to measure the good done for the land, and use that goodness as money?” That way, one way to get money would be to do good for the land, and therefore we could expect some people to choose to do good for the land in order to get money. This is the genesis of the idea for a new kind of money which is explicitly engineered to have the side effect of making the lands of planet earth healthier and to make all us human inhabitants financially wealthier. You could say that the top level requirements for this new product are that it shall increase the health of the land that produced it, and it shall increase the financial wealth of the owner of the land that produced it. In order to find a way to meet those top level requirements we can examine a few more facts.

Fact: Gold is an element on the periodic table.

Fact: Oxygen is an element on the periodic table.

    Fact: Green plants exhale oxygen.

Fact: Oxygen can be thought of as a crude measurement of the good being done to the land. All other things being equal, land producing more oxygen will have more plants, and again all other things being equal, land with more plants will have more animals, and land with more plants and animals can generally be considered healthier than land with fewer plants and animals. See a typical acre of land on the moon compared with a typical acre of land on planet earth for an extreme example.

It seems that oxygen might meet one of our requirements. What if We The People changed the US dollar again, this time to, say, 100g O? Did those oxygen atoms increase the health of the land that produced them, and did they increase the financial wealth of the owner of that land?

Fact: The universe is trying to kill you.

Each one of those oxygen atoms released by those plants is a by-product of a process that is effectively holding the universe at bay, preventing it, temporarily, from killing you. Although the process happens in a steady state condition, you could think of it happening on a daily basis. If you imagine that all the plants on earth died one day, nothing would happen immediately. But by the same time the next day, twenty four hours later, the surface of the earth would be a little closer to being like the surface of the moon. Every day all those plants on our planet are in effect repairing a whole days worth of damage from the universe. Therefore, in effect, all those oxygen atoms are a measurement of how much healthier the land is with the plants than it would have been without it, and therefore the oxygen atoms are a measurement of how much the health of the land has been improved.

This, then, is our new product. A new version of the US dollar, this time using oxygen instead of gold. It could be called the Oxygen dollar. It will be easier to produce than gold, since we’ll let the green plants do that part, but will, at least initially, be harder to measure, just because methods of measuring gold are well known but not so much for oxygen. It meets the requirement to improve the health of the land because it gives land owners financial incentive to keep living plants on their land, and even plant more.

How do these Oxygen dollars work? First, you, the land owner, sign up for an account with a specialised bank. The bank then verifies your identity and verifies your ownership of the land parcel(s) you claim. Then the bank contracts with an oxygen verification company to credit your account, at the rate of, say, one cent per gram. It’s the same as was done historically in the USA when you could dig up some silver or gold from your land, refine it, and send it to the US mint to be made into coins which you could then spend into circulation. When dollars were defined as 1/20th of an ounce of gold, you could send one ounce of gold to the mint and when the coin came back you would have twenty new dollars to spend into circulation. Therefore this money also meets the requirement to improve the financial wealth of the owner of the land that produced it, since it is the owner’s account that gets the new money.

    * From dictionary.com, a bill is a piece of paper worth a certain amount. A dollar bill is a piece of paper worth a dollar, which is 1/42.2 oz gold.

** We The People know that there isn’t enough gold to redeem all the notes right now, but we’ll get you your money. You just have to give us more time.

    1. Benjamin Neusse

When the sun does not shine, like a night, plants suck up Oxygen, metabolize the sugar they have stored back into energy (ATP) and then release CO2 and water. Yes Plants perform respiration too, just like animals.

  15. Benjamin Neusse kindly points out that plants also inhale some oxygen. I did not know that and have not verified it. The important part, for this new tyranny elimination money, is that they exhale oxygen, every day. That way the accounts of all land owners with plants on their lands get credited every day, by counting up all those oxygen atoms that were exhaled. Think of this as a method of getting new money into circulation in a stable and predictable way. This is as opposed to the current method used which is to add compound interest debt money to Our backs due to committee decision. This new, stable and predictable money input, which is paid to land owners for doing something good for us all, namely not chopping down their trees, is how We The People get all those government employees off our back without firing them.

The rate of one cent per gram of O was chosen for a reason. According to what the internet told me about how many trees are on Our national lands and how much oxygen each of them exhales, at that rate Our national lands will produce around $4T per year. If the internet told me wrong then the right number can be used. Instead of one cent per gram, 1/2 cent, or 2 cents, or whatever. It’s just a number and the important part for escaping tyranny is that we pick the number which provides us $4T per year.

The number $4T is picked because, as you may know, that is approximately the federal yearly budget here in 2016. If We The People were to make this change to our official money the US dollar, We could stop taxing each other and stop borrowing money. This is because taxing and borrowing are where that $4T currently comes from. We’ll just transfer the blood sucker to a new source. With the current system nearly all the debt is paid off with new debt, and thus the total debt increases faster and faster over time due to the compound interest effect. Also with the current system, part of the new debt consists of new money entering circulation, from the Federal Reserve banks, thus causing the amount of money in circulation to increase faster and faster over time.

If, instead, new money is metered into circulation due to oxygen from plants, then about the same amount will enter circulation every year, assuming the number of plants on the land parcels remains about constant. Because the increase in the amount of money in circulation every year will remain about constant, the percentage increase in the money supply will decrease year over year, eventually nearing zero.

Also according to what the internet told me, about half of the trees in the USA are on private lands. So if $4T is entering circulation via Our national lands, then another $4T will enter from private lands, assuming private land owners sign up for accounts. This new money gets spent into circulation directly from private hands, without first getting paid out to government employees and manufacturers of guns, tanks and bombs. This money flowing directly into our individual accounts will counter some of the price inflation effects of all that new money entering circulation, as it will enable more people to be not late to the bidding wars resulting from the new money.

By way of comparison, this idea of getting new money into circulation is not new, and therefore can’t be dismissed by true believers in the current way of doing things. It is chosen mechanism central banks of the have adopted for many years, by buying Our debt with new money. One of the consequences of this new US dollar is also the same as the professed result the central banks are seeking, which is to reduce poverty.

Here’s what We The People will have accomplished with this change to our money.

    1) Put a leash on the beast leviathan. It only gets $4T per year from now on. It is true that a post change effort to re-instate taxes and borrowing could be initiated. It is also true that any person to make such a suggestion could become very disliked, possibly even so disliked that they find themselves with a security problem. Once We get rid of the tax man and our creditors, we’re not likely, in my opinion, to let those monkeys climb on our backs ever again.
    – Among other things, this means no more of the hated IRS and its forms and its inquisitors. Suddenly the price of an item is it’s real price, no tax add-on.

    2) Reduce poverty. More money in more pockets due to:
    – Less taxes.
    – Lower prices due to elimination of federal taxes in the supply chain.
    – More jobs, to:
    — Measure the oxygen accurately.
    — Credit the accounts of landowners reliably.
    — Verify identity of account holders and land owners.
    — Assist land owners with health of the trees and other plants.
    — Sue people who impair the oxygen generation capacity of lands.
    — Trade and hedge the new money.
    – More jobs due to improved business conditions. This is because the amount of money entering circulation is stable and predictable, resulting in stable and predictable interest rates which aids business planning.
    — This also reduces poverty due to the explosion of cheaper better products from the new businesses.
    – Money flowing directly into circulation through private land owners as they spend their oxygen dollars, reducing the so called inflation tax.
    – All Our creditors made whole. Or at least as whole as possible, seeings how we’re paying them off with new dollars. You can think of this as a bankruptcy plan.

    3) Reduce environmental degradation. Simply because all land owners now in effect get paid for the health of their land, and thus are less likely to harm it.

Finally, a possible severe negative side effect of this new US dollar. Hyperinflation. The amount of money in circulation may increase by 100% the first year, possibly resulting in an inflationary price run-away and destruction of our money. Although we all will know, in advance, that the amount added to circulation will decrease to 50% the second year, 33% the third year, and down to 5% the twentieth year, a hyper-inflationary runaway is not impossible. Next, how We The People can hedge our bets against this possibility, and the astoundingly beautiful future that results.
